Navigating Change: Exploring the Role of Family Functioning and Positive Youth Development in Shaping Adolescents' Materialistic Values
Purpose
In an era of rapid transformation, understanding how change influences adolescent development is crucial for fostering resilience and well-being. The current research aimed to explore the relationship between family functioning and materialism among Pakistani adolescents. Additionally, the study explored the mediating role of positive youth development in the relationship between the study variables.
Design/Methodology/Approach
This survey-based study utilized standardized questionnaires to collect data from university students. The data were analyzed using PROCESS statistical software to test hypotheses to confirm existing theories in the context of youth development.
Findings
The results revealed a significant positive correlation between materialism, family functioning, and positive youth development. Positive youth development was identified as a significant mediator in the relationship between materialism and family functioning. Gender differences were observed in positive youth development.
Originality/Value
This study provides valuable insights into the role of family functioning and positive youth development in addressing materialistic tendencies among adolescents in Pakistan. The findings suggest the importance of family-based interventions to enhance family functioning and to reduce materialism. Additionally, by emphasizing the mediating role of positive youth development, the findings offer valuable guidance for policymakers, educators, and mental health professionals to navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving world and foster adolescent well-being in Pakistan.
