Ivan is a kinesiologist investigating how humans process and merge multiple sensory inputs into motor commands to plan and execute skilled actions. He uses a multimodal approach that combines behavioral experiments, custom-made experimental setups, a motion capture system, and Bayesian statistics. Ivan's multidisciplinary approach intersects multisensory integration, motor control, movement physiology, psychology, computational modeling, and cognitive neuroscience.
The integration of sensory information for perception and action
Hold your phone in one hand and close your eyes. Now, pass it from one hand to the other. Was it easy? If the answer is yes, this is thanks to your haptic (proprioception and touch) sense, which allows you to sense the phone's position and grasp it with the other hand without seeing it. But how do these actions compare to those toward objects we see or hear? What object-related information does each sensory input provide us? In this talk, I will give an overview of how the brain processes and integrates information from different sensory modalities—such as audition, vision, and touch—to guide everyday actions. The presented experimental studies will provide an overview of the interplay between these senses, with the aim of giving insights into the understanding of sensorimotor processes in both healthy individuals and those with sensory impairments, with implications for rehabilitation and the development of assistive technologies.
