Accelerating Change: Solution-Focused Strategies for Single Session Therapy
In today’s fast-evolving world, mental health professionals face the growing challenge of meeting increased demand within limited time and resources. This workshop addresses this challenge by introducing a powerful, time-efficient therapeutic approach that leverages Solution Focused Brief Therapy within a single-session framework. Solution-Focused Single Session Therapy (SF-SST) is designed to deliver immediate impact by helping clients identify and amplify their strengths and resources, facilitating forward momentum within a single session. Aligned with the conference theme, "Change," this workshop presents SF-SST as a model for delivering meaningful change by maximizing each therapeutic encounter’s potential.
Single Session Therapy (SST) is rooted in the principle of delivering therapeutic services at the point of need, empowering clients to leverage their strengths and continue their journey toward change independently after a single session. This model is not new—its origins trace back to the early days of psychotherapy and Freud’s work—but its relevance has increased in recent years due to heightened demand for mental health services, longer waiting lists, and resource constraints.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), a pragmatic and evidence-based approach, is ideal for SST, as it emphasizes immediate solutions. Together, these models allow clinicians to create a lasting change in a single session by focusing on solutions and strengths rather than problems. Importantly, SF-SST supports client self-reliance, while additional sessions remain available if required.
This workshop will introduce participants to the essential principles and mindset behind SF-SST, debunking common myths around its application and effectiveness. Participants will be guided through the SF-SST process in a structured, interactive environment, where they will have opportunities to engage in practical exercises. The session will include an introduction to the foundations of SST and SFBT, supported by empirical evidence, and a group discussion on the mindset and goals unique to SF-SST. Participants will explore real-life examples and visual aids, and will engage in roleplay activities to practice delivering SF-SST in realistic settings.
Through this workshop, attendees will gain a new perspective on brief, solution-focused interventions, enhancing their ability to respond to clients’ needs. SF-SST offers practitioners a pathway to accelerate change, fostering resilience and self-directed growth in clients while meeting the urgent demands of modern mental health services.
